We’ve all done it tossed something in the machine on a hopeful guess, only to pull out a shrunken jumper or a blazer that’s lost its shape. The good news is that knowing whether to wash or dry clean isn’t guesswork at all. After 40+ years caring for North London’s wardrobes, here’s how we decide so you can too.
Start with the care label
That little square of symbols inside the collar or seam is the manufacturer’s instructions, and it’s the first thing to check. The key one is the circle: a plain circle means “dry clean only,” and a circle with a line through it means “do not dry clean.” A tub of water symbol means it’s safe to wash the number inside is the maximum temperature.
If the label says dry clean only, take it at its word. That instruction usually means the fabric, dye, structure or trims won’t survive water and once damage is done, it can’t be undone.
When dry cleaning is the safer choice
Dry cleaning uses gentle solvents instead of water, which is kinder to fabrics that water can shrink, warp or fade. Reach for it when you’re dealing with:
- Structured garments suits, blazers and coats, where washing can ruin the internal shaping and canvas.
- Delicate fabrics silk, wool, velvet, cashmere and anything embellished, beaded or sequinned.
- Tailored or lined pieces where the outer fabric and the lining might shrink at different rates.
- Set-in or oily stains solvents lift grease and oil-based marks that water struggles with.
